Welcoming Another New Member to Nu Mix!

"... [My] family is East African, Burundian to be more precise, - my home and my education is French - my childhood and youth made me grow in Switzerland - and I lived under the US umbrella of my passeport. As such, I consider myself as a multicultural person who lived in a multicultural environment named Geneva. I am looking forward to meeting multicultural people in your organisation. "

WELCOME!

XPLOSAIC MULTICULTURAL SPEAKER SERIES

Panel 4: "Creating an Environment for Academic Success"
Thursday April 14, 2011 at 2:50pm
Amilcar Cabral Center (at the JDOAAI, Light Refreshments Served)

Marlyn Batista,Sophomore, Ujima Scholar
Silvia Domiguez, Assistant Professor, Sociology
Richard Harris, Director, NU Programs in Multicultural Engineering
Anthony Erwin, Senior Director, Univ. Financial Aid & Scholarships
Emmett Price, Chair, the Department of African-American Studies
David Winch, Director, We Care Program

The panel topic "Creating an Environment for Academic Success" will focus on the continuous effort in an increasingly multicultural and diverse environment to inspire students toward academic success at Northeastern University. As universities across the country strategize on adjusting to the rapidly changing demographics of their campuses, they also reconsider their model of what it means to help and support students in their efforts to be academically successful.

The desire for maintaining and supporting campus diversity is sometimes perceived as being at odds with or mutually exclusive from the university's desire to attain a certain level excellence and success. The panelists will speak about, from their respective areas, the continuing effort to support students in their pursuit of excellence and success in conjunction with the goal of a culturally diverse campus.
______

The Xplosaic Multicultural Speaker Series is a campus wide dialogue intended to inspire conversation related to the issue of multiculturalism and diversity on college campuses. The ultimate goal is to increase awareness of multicultural and diversity issues and to motivate participation and engagement by all of Northeastern's cultures and communities. The issues discussed will be germane to Northeastern University, but intended to embrace the concern of colleges and universities in general. The series includes four panels of Northeastern faculty members and administrators.

This Month With Nu Mix!

Hello All!

We haven't been able to touch base in a little while I hope everyone is doing well. March is a busy month for us so I wanted to update everyone on the happenings for Nu Mix in the coming weeks.

First and foremost, next week is the start of non-violence week at Northeastern. To partake in this event we will hold a regular meeting on Monday, March 14th, where we will have activities and discussions based around this touchy topic (violence) among different cultures. More info to come as the date approaches.

Second, we are partnering up with Nu Pride at their full body meeting next week! We are very excited to be working with them and they are beyond exciting to work with us. This is going to be a really great collaboration. We are planning to join them in their meetingThursday, March 17th, more information in terms of the time and location will come out later this week, so stay tuned!!

Third, as some of you are aware the Museum of Science is hosting a new exhibit for the next couple of weeks. The exhibit is called Race: Are we so different? Please visithttp://www.smm.org/race/ to check it out. We will be distrubuting sign up sheets in our next couple of meetings so we can get an idea of how interested everyone is in going. We feel that this will be a great opportunity for all of us. We are planning to attend onSunday, March 20th, and perhaps grab some ice cream after! More information to follow.

Fourth, the HAPA SWAYA conference is coming up!! For those of you who do not know what this is please check out this website: http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/harvardhapa/swaya/ This is a great opportunity for us to go and collaborate with others. A few of the eboard members attended last year and absolutely loved the event. We will also be providing sign up sheets for this event so that we can perhaps collaborate with each other and head over to Harvard together. The dates for the conference are Friday March 25th and Saturday March 26th. Registration is required but of course we will be covering this in the next meeting.

Fifth (yes fifth) we are also collaborating with CVSA this semester!!! We will be attending their general body meeting in the Cabral Center in the African American Institute onTuesday, March 29th at 6pm for discussions and games based around multiculturalism. We are SO excited for this event and you should be too. CVSA is a great student group on campus and they can truly help us out in terms of making our group more recognized on campus!

So be sure to mark your calendars for all of the dates that I just threw at you. I understand that it is a lot, but do not friend my friends because we will be constantly updating you and reminding you of EVERYTHING!

Good luck with everyone and we look forward to seeing you all on Monday at 6pm!!

"I would like to join an organization such as this one, due to the fact that Northeastern has many students that are biracial and multiracial along with students from different parts of the world. Northeastern encourages students to interact with students of different cultures. However, not every student feels obligated to do that because they may feel they can't identify with students of other cultures or because of stereotypes that have handicapped their mind. Therefore having an organization that allows EVERYONE to discuss issues about how they define themselves or educate themselves about other cultures, would somehow breakdown barriers that individuals of different cultures have between one another."
